Somaliland Ministerial Delegations visit to Taiwan Highlights.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN; FEBRUARY 7, 2022 - A high-caliber delegation of Somaliland Ministers led by the Foreign Minister, Dr. Essa Kayd, departed to Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, after receiving an official invitation from Taiwan.

After a two-day trip to Taiwan, the Somaliland delegation arrived in Taipei where they were officially welcomed by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Taiwan Hon. Tseng. This occasion marked Somaliland’s first official to Taiwan.

The Somaliland delegation first met with Taiwan President H.E. Tsai Ing-wen and Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu to discuss the future of Somaliland - Taiwan’s friendship and partnership.

Somaliland’s ministerial delegation met with Taiwan’s top government officials during their visit. The delegation met with Taiwan Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-Hua, Council of Agriculture Minister Chen Chi-Chung, Coast Guard Administration Director-General Chou Mei-wu, and Taiwan External Trade Development Council Chairman James Huang. In these meetings, the delegation pitched Somaliland's potential as a target for investment, particularly in natural resources such as oil, gas, and coal.

The delegation also made visits to Taiwanese organizations including International Cooperation and Development Fund, CPC Corporation, and CECI Engineering Consultants, Inc., to discuss and provide specific recommendations on how to partner and cooperate with Somaliland sectors.

Somaliland’s Foreign Minister Dr. Essa Kayd described his visit to Taiwan as a milestone in further establishing friendship and partnership between the two countries. "As a sovereign nation, Somaliland's right to engage in peaceful and friendly foreign relations with all other nations is enshrined in international law and all coercive or threatening measures to deny such collaboration between international partners not only represents an affront to principal, protocols, and norms of which the international order is based but does little to promote the peace and security the region and the world require", said Dr. Essa Kayd Mohamoud, Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign and International Cooperation.
