Hargeisa, September 22th, 2024 - The Somaliland Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Rhoda J Elmi today, welcomed a delegation headed by Ambassador James Swan, the Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General.
During the meeting, at the SL Foreign Affairs Ministry, both parties exchanged views on regional development, humanitarian assistance, and the upcoming elections in Somaliland.
Ambassador Rhoda reaffirmed Somaliland’s long-standing commitment to regional peace and security, emphasizing the nation's promising development, democratization efforts, and the preparation for upcoming elections, despite limited support from the international community. She also presented Somaliland’s perspective on current regional issues, expressing Somaliland’s concerns about Egypt’s renewed but negative involvement in the region.
Moreover, Ambassador Rhoda reiterated Somaliland’s sovereignty as enshrined in international law, including the UN Charter, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), and various UN General Assembly resolutions.
Lastly, Ambassador Rhoda also encouraged the United Nations to continue its vital role in providing humanitarian and development assistance to the Republic of Somaliland.
