The Government of the Republic of Somaliland denounces false claims by Mogadishu unelected Administration on democratic achievements of Somaliland.

Hargeisa, Somaliland, November 9th, 2024 - The Government of the Republic of Somaliland firmly refutes the statement issued by the unelected administration in Mogadishu. It is absurd for an unelected failed administration to attempt to take credit for the Republic of Somaliland 34 years of democratic progress, falsely linking our accomplishments to their own 60-year history without elections.

We call on the unelected Mogadishu administration to respect Somaliland’s sovereignty and to avoid any interference in our upcoming elections on November 13. the Republic of Somaliland has a distinguished history of democratic governance, holding nine free and fair elections—including Presidential, Parliamentary, Local Council, and Referendum votes—each culminating in peaceful transitions of power since 2003. Somalia, by contrast, has not held an election in over six decades, and therefore has no grounds to claim our democratic milestones.

As Somaliland prepares for another election, over 90 international observers are set to witness our enduring dedication to democracy and the “one person, one vote” principle. This level of transparency and accountability underscores Somaliland’s unique position as the only truly democratic country in the Horn of Africa. We remain confident that this election will once again affirm Somaliland’s commitment to democratic values on the global stage.
